Dance Instructor (Employment Beginning August 2017)
The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts seeks applicants for a dance director and faculty position with employment starting August 2017. This is a full-time, ten-month position with job duties shared between the Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts (LSMSA) and the Northwestern State University Theatre/Dance Program (NSU), with promotional review and salary progressions housed at LSMSA.
LSMSA duties will include teaching one to two dance classes each semester and producing a Dance Ensemble concert each semester. NSU duties will include teaching of one to two college level dance classes each semester and possibly serving as choreographer for dance productions in conjunction with the larger departmental needs. Both institutions provide a full curriculum in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts that is part of the students' academic load and schedule. Instruction in dance ranges from entry level in ballet, modern, and jazz to advanced work in those areas. We welcome applicants who can also teach courses in a somatic practice, Laban, Dance History, African Diaspora and Hip Hop. The position requires an individual with training and experience in providing choreography and/or leadership to a performing company. In order to be successful, the individual must be able to demonstrate and actively engage the dancers in both the routines of technique classes and the demands of ensemble rehearsals.
Other professional responsibilities of the position include advising students, holding office hours, mentoring students interested in dance, and contributing to the artistic and intellectual life of both schools. A master’s degree in dance, dance pedagogy, or a dance related course of study is required (M.F.A. preferred).
